Diamonds have been around for thousands of years and have proven to be a timeless, forever symbol of love.

When you want your jewelry to look just as good and sparkly, for much less money, take a look at cubic zirconia.

Zirconium dioxide is a type of Zirconium that has been synthesized and used in jewelry. Zircon has always been a popular option and a gemstone of choice for most people who cannot afford the prices of diamonds.

As such, these early versions of Cubic Zirconia were very porous, and they did not hold their sparkle for very long. They absorbed oils very easily, and they got very cloudy quickly.

These CZ stones are resistant to the intense temperatures in the sawing machine, which makes them ideal for use in the cutting process.

Many years later improvements were made on the early cubic zirconia, and this change was less porous. Though this change didn’t happen too soon, but does happen eventually.

So also, if you want to get rid of the cloudy film and restore the CZ shine, you should use the polish remover that is designed for the CZ.

How do you remove the cloudy film from your cubic zirconia? Below are some tips on how to get rid of the cloudy film on your cubic zirconia.

1. Cleaning the CZ jewelry using warm water and mild dishwashing liquid

This is the best and simplest way of cleaning CZ jewelry, and most people swear by it because it works.

With this method, you don't have to do much but make sure that the detergent you use is mild and non-abrasive and we recommend using the blue Dawn dishwashing liquid because it's mild and clean the CZ perfectly.

You should only use cleaners that are gentle on your jewelry, and will not harm the CZ stone.

To clean the Cubic Zirconia jewelry, you will need the following – two small bowls, blue Dawn dishwashing detergent, a soft, lint-free cloth, and a soft-bristled brush.

Now that you've got these materials, go ahead and do what's necessary to complete the step-by-step process.

First, you must make the cleaning solution by mixing the warm water with the detergent in one of the small bowls.

Use a 1-part detergent to 2 parts water – this doesn’t have to be exact, but don’t use too much water.

This jewelry-cleaning solution will help your jewelry stay polished longer. Let it sit or soak for about two minutes, then clean with your regular jewelry polish.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush gently scrub the CZ jewelry. Pay attention to the area around the prong or pave setting, behind the centerpiece, and around all other nooks and crannies to ensure that the entire piece of jewelry is thoroughly clean and that the shine of the CZ and the metal is restored.

Note: if you have a soft-bristled toothbrush that you trust to get the work done properly, you could use it or the eye shadow brush.

Wearing a piece of jewelry requires extreme caution. If a piece is accidentally damaged, make sure it's cleaned and rinsed in an acid-free container before it's reinserted into the case.

You could also rinse it in the sink, but if you don't want to, you can boil it instead, or soak it overnight in cool water to kill the bacteria.

If you’re planning to sell CZ jewelry, make sure you thoroughly rinse them after washing. If you don’t, soap residue or suds could affect the CZ's performance.

This is the reason why we recommend rinsing the engagement ring under the faucet, as long as you plug the drain.

After that, wipe the inside of the ring with a dry lint-free, soft cloth to remove excess oil and grime.

Don't let your CZ air dry. You'll be shooting better, and your barrel life will be longer.

I'd gently dab dry the CZ and then keep dabbing until I can't feel any more moisture on the piece of jewelry.

2. Soaking and cleaning the CZ Jewelry in case of extreme cloudiness

This is the method of cleaning you should go for if you are unable to get rid of the entire CZ film using the method above. You will be happy to know that this method is just as easy, and you need the same items as above, just more time needed.

I've been experimenting with this method for the last couple of days and have found it to be easy, and I only need the same items as above.

To start, mix the detergent with hot water.

You'll need to mix 3 parts hot water with just one part of Dawn dishwashing liquid.

Next, submerge the CZ in the soapy mixture and set it in gently until it is completely covered.

We think the CZ would last just about as long if it was soaked for two minutes. You can soak longer than that, though.

After, gently rub the CZ piece using the soft-bristled brush.

It's a good idea to wear gloves if the water is still too hot.

Now, wash out the CZ completely under the faucet. You should use the tap, not a dishwasher or washing machine.

You could take a damp paper towel and wipe down the inside of the bowl with warm water to rinse off all the soapy residue.

If the necklace has been worn, we recommend taking it to a jeweler for cleaning.

The professionals use high-powered cleaning methods like the use of the high-pressure steam cleaner or the ultrasonic cleaner to clean the piece.

3. Polishing the CZ jewelry

If you’re looking for a jewelry-cleaning product that can help restore the shine of your CZ jewelry, it’s good to look into this.

The diamond polishing cloth can also be used on CZ jewelry set on sterling silver, 14k gold, or plated gold.

If you want to remove rust from your jewelry, you need a polishing cloth, polishing cream, and/or the tarnish remover.

These are best used with jewelry cleaning kits.

Only certain types of cleaning products are safe for your skin.

For plated jewelry, you must be extra careful when cleaning them. You should use warm soapy water, rather than the polishing cloth, because the cleaning abrasives in the polishing cloth will remove some of the plated metal.

Why does CZ dull over time?

No, all gemstones lose their shine over time because of different reasons, and the Cubic Zirconia stone isn’t an exception.

Ceramic zirconia is very strong and durable. The biggest reason for its durability is that it is protected from all kinds of harsh elements and the biggest factor for the dulling of this material is daily exposure to various liquids, soaps

When you take it out of your pocket and set it on the table, the stone’s surface becomes dull.

A CZ bracelet is the perfect size to make a statement, yet, unlike a diamond, it will be scratched by day-to-day wear and tear.

A diamond's sparkle and brilliance decrease if it's exposed to too many chemical substances.

The good news is that the methods recommended above will ensure that the cloudiness of the CZ is removed, and the shine of the ring is restored.

Conclusion

To restore the shine of your Cubic Zirconia, opt for the good-ol’ warm, soapy water cleaning option.
